10 Healthy Snack Ideas
Here are a few simple, healthy mini-meal or snack ideas I’ve been enjoying lately.
1. Sort of a play on ‘strawberries and cream’ – strawberries dipped in organic 0% fat plain greek yogurt. Takes only 5 minutes to prepare, but you’ll feel like a queen eating them. Great for breakfast or a snack!
2. 1/2 an organic avocado, sliced with lime juice, sea salt, freshly ground black pepper, cumin, and paprika. The great thing about this is it’s simple, satisfying, and you can customize it to your personal taste based on which spices you add.
3. Today’s breakfast: organic oatmeal (plain with flax), with organic sliced strawberries and blueberries. Delicious and a great way to get the metabolism going in the morning!
4. A lazy staple of mine: veggies and dip. In this case, baby carrots, sliced English cucumber, and roasted red pepper hummus.
5. A 2-minute breakfast idea for when you’re in a rush but don’t want to skip that all-important first meal of the day: blueberries with organic plain greek yogurt stirred in. All you have to do is wash the blueberries – since they’re already bite size, you save time on having to slice them!
6. One of my favourite salads: organic mixed baby greens with avocado and dressing. I tend to use a Mediterranean Greek Vinaigrette. It has yummy bits of feta cheese in it, and its ingredients are all natural. (Hence why it needs to be refrigerated.) Mixed greens are healthier for you than lettuce, because they are darker green and contain more chlorophyll. The avocado gives it creaminess and makes the meal more filling (and delicious!).
7. Another great breakfast idea (or snack, or dessert): organic whole grain cereal with flax and dried blueberries. All natural ingredients, plus tons of fibre. Add in a sliced banana, a bit of vanilla almond milk, and voila!
8. Guacamole! When I’m craving something creamy and satisfying, this is what I go for. My personal recipe is one organic avocado, one small organic tomato (or 1/2 a large one), finely chopped red onion, freshly squeezed lime juice, sea salt, black pepper, and cumin.
9. Another breakfast I love: that same organic multigrain cereal (mentioned above), with whatever fruit you have available sliced in. In this case, one organic banana, several strawberries, and blueberries. You can add in milk or almond milk if you want, but I didn’t this time. This also makes a really satisfying dessert. The cereal and banana keep you full for a while!
10. And as a snack – a whole grapefruit! While the pith and skin are very healthy, they’re too bitter for me, so I peel them off and just enjoy the juicy bits on the inside.
