Hunter Wellies: Haul & Review
I love rain. What I don’t love are squishy, soggy toes. These last few months have been very wet here in Toronto, and I’ve been drenched to the bone on more than one occasion.
I’ve been eying Hunter Wellington rubber rain boots for quite a while, and after getting soaked one too many times, I finally went and bought myself a pair.
They’re the quintessential British rain boots, renowned for their quality and durability. They come in a variety of styles and colors, but I chose the original tall rain boots, in black.
(They also come in glossy, short, packable, and wide calf.)
Mass produced for the British army during both World Wars, and a favorite of The Royal Family for years, Hunter Boots are a style icon. Hunter Wellingtons are also the recipient of a rare two Royal Warrants: both from HRH The Duke of Edinburgh in 1977, and HM The Queen in 1986.
Hunter boots are made from natural rubber instead of synthetic, due to its tougher, suppler properties and snugger fit.
I had a hard time choosing between the original and gloss styles, but after reading a bunch of reviews, I learned that the gloss boots tend to show dirt more easily, and that the gloss effect fades away after a few uses anyway.
A few tips: if you’re a half size like I am, size down. They’re designed to be extra roomy for thick socks, but a size down will still fit perfectly (and allow room for socks).
Also, if you have wider calves, I’d suggest getting the “Huntress” wide-calf boot. I have slimmer calfs, and the original suits me perfectly, but doesn’t give much extra room (which I’m glad about – most tall boots tend to be too wide in the calf area for me).
