2014 Films I’ve Seen & Want to See
I love storytelling in all its forms. Books, movies, television shows, plays, musicals – you name it, I love it. So naturally, I watch a LOT of movies.
I thought it might be fun to catalog all the films from 2014 I’ve either seen, or am counting down days to see. Click any movie title to get to its IMDb page. Add your own picks in the comments for movies you’re excited about this year. Here we go!
2014 Films I’ve Seen to Date:
- Divergent (A fun ride, pretty faithful to the book, so far as I can remember.)
- Noah (Mixed feelings. The first half felt like a strange hybrid of Transformers and LOTR, the second half was quite moving.)
- The Other Woman (So funny. Bent-in-half, trying-not-to-pee kind of funny. Also, women collaborating instead of competing on film? Awesome. More of that, please.)
- Captain America: The Winter Soldier (It was okay. Action movies are all starting to blend together to me. Plus, the Cap isn’t my favorite superhero film franchise by a long shot – that title belongs to Iron Man.)
- Disney Nature: Bears (Really, really cute. Made me crave salmon.)
- Rio 2 (I love these movies. They are visually stunning, a lot of fun, great music, and make me feel like I went on vacation to Brazil.)
- Only Lovers Left Alive (Very…unique. Not a ton of plot, but the dynamic between Tom Hiddleston’s character and Tilda Swinton’s as immortal vampire lovers was intriguing. Bonus points for Mia Wasikowska.)
- Maleficent (Loved it. Angelina Jolie makes the film, and pulls off magnetic, sympathetic villainy like no other. Also, some nice feminist moments and a touching story.)
- X-Men: Days of Future Past (I preferred First Class, but this was an enjoyable film too. Particularly all the scenes with Quicksilver.)
- Fading Gigolo (This one took me by surprise. Really warm and very sweet. John Turturro, Vanessa Paradis, and Woody Allen shine.)
- The Grand Budapest Hotel (Wes Anderson is masterful. Delightfully funny in the oddest way, with uniquely beautiful, stylized visuals.)
- The Double (Based on Dostoyevsky’s story, this one was probably brilliant if I could understand it better. If you’re prone to anxiety or irritability, stay away – it made me want to scream. Mostly went for Mia Wasikowska.)
2014 Films I Want to See:
- Belle (Literally everything I love in one film. Period drama, gorgeous cinematography, woman of colour as the lead, female writer and director. Please support this film!!!)
- The Love Punch (Because Emma Thompson. In a screwball comedy/heist film. Did I mention Emma Thompson!?)
- The Fault in Our Stars (Because I’m a masochist and the book hurt so good.)
- Begin Again (There is a list of actors whose movies I will watch regardless of all other factors. Keira Knightley is on that list.)
- Lucy (Interesting concept, plus a female lead in an action movie that doesn’t revolve around men. Pretty damn good!)
- The Giver (Based on an incredible book I read long, long, ago. Plus, Meryl Streep.)
- Tracks (Because Mia Wasikowska, as you might have gathered, is on said list.)
- Gone Girl (Incredible book which I reviewed, can’t wait to see how it plays out on screen.)
- Jersey Boys (I took Monica for her birthday to see this musical live together. The trailer looks awesome, I can’t wait. I need more movie-musicals in my life.)
- The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 (No explanation required, I think.)
- The Hobbit: There and Back Again (Ditto.)
- Annie (Speaking of movie-musicals, I am STOKED about this. I was actually in this musical at school when I was a child. Can’t wait to see Quvenzhané Wallis rock this role. The trailer alone makes me smile from ear to ear!)
- Into the Woods (Meryl Streep, Rob Marshall, and fairy tales. I can’t wait.)
Edited to add:
- The Imitation Game (Benedict Cumberbatch, Keira Knightley, World War II period drama. That’s all you gotta tell me. And no, it’s not an Atonement sequel.)
- Magic in the Moonlight (I may not be a fan of Woody Allen anymore, but I am a fan of Colin Firth and Emma Stone.)
- Get On Up (a biopic about musician James Brown, whose music I love.)
- The Hundred-Foot Journey (Helen Mirren and a story about cultures colliding…over food. Watch the trailer to understand.)
- This Is Where I Leave You (A story about a dysfunctional family grieving, performed by a stellar cast including Tina Fey.)
- Dear White People (because the teaser trailer had me in fits!)
Which movies are you most eager to see? xx
