Little Lies to Stop Telling Ourselves
In the words of Dr. House, everybody lies. Here are just a few little lies to stop telling ourselves.
- 10 minutes is enough time to finish the last 31 minutes of this show
- Just one more episode and then I’ll go to sleep
- 5 hours is enough sleep to function on
- 4 hours is enough sleep to function on
- 3 hours is enough sleep to function on
- I can hit snooze again and not be late
- I’ll start this project in an hour
- They probably just haven’t seen my message yet
- They’re probably just really busy
- Maybe their phone died
- Maybe they’re out of town??
- If it’s called a “salad” that means it’s healthy
- I’ll wake up really early and do it then
- If I buy new running shoes I’ll go to the gym every day
- They’re whispering about me
- I should skip a meal to balance out overeating
- If I just had ______, I’d be happy
- What I want hasn’t happened yet, which means it never will
- I’ll start tomorrow
- They’re better than me
- I’d do that if I had more time
- I can’t live without them
- I’m nothing special
- I’m going to do that one day
- I deserved it
- Being unhappy is beautiful and poetic
- My dreams aren’t “realistic”
- I’m never going to be the kind of person I want to be
- No one will ever love me
- I don’t need help
- I can change them
- I’m not kind enough
- I’m not smart enough
- I’m not funny enough
- I’m not attractive enough
- I’m not talented enough
- I’m not successful enough
- I’m not enough.
These little lies can crawl into our heads and make a home there, if we’re not careful. They poison our thoughts, make us feel insecure, make us hurt ourselves, and prevent us from chasing our dreams and being luminously happy.
Go out there and make your life exactly what you want it to be, starting right now.
I’m enough. And so are you. You’re fantastic. We’re going to figure this whole thing out and be just fine, okay? xx
